Oatey Clear Cleaner 16oz: Prep PVC, CPVC & ABS Joints
By Maintenance Depot Plumbing Team · Last reviewed
Quick answer
Oatey Clear Cleaner (16oz, #30795) removes dirt, grease and grime from PVC, CPVC and ABS pipe before cementing. Apply it to the pipe and socket, let it evaporate, then cement immediately.

Most failed PVC joints come down to one thing: poor surface prep. Oatey Clear Cleaner (16oz, #30795) removes the dirt, grease and grime that stop solvent cement from bonding properly.

Features

- Flows freely and evaporates quickly
- For ABS, PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings
- Clear formula leaves no colour mark
Cleaner vs primer
- Cleaner removes contaminants from the surface.
- Primer softens the plastic so the cement can fuse more deeply.
Some local codes require a coloured (purple) primer on pressure lines so inspectors can see it was used. Check what's required for your job.
How to use it
- Cut the pipe square and deburr the edges.
- Apply cleaner to the outside of the pipe and the inside of the fitting socket with the dauber.
- Let it evaporate. This takes seconds in warm weather.
- Apply cement and join the pieces straight away.
Safety tips
- Use in a well-ventilated area.
- Keep away from flames and sparks; solvent vapours are flammable.
- Close the lid tightly after use to stop it drying out.
Complete your kit
Pair Oatey Clear Cleaner with a solvent cement that suits your pipe, such as Weld-On 790 or Lanco Wet-Dry.
