How to replace a toilet handle

  1. Turn off the water and flush to empty the tank.
  2. Unhook the flapper chain from the old lift arm.
  3. Unscrew the mounting nut inside the tank. Note: it's usually a reverse thread, so turn it clockwise to loosen.
  4. Remove the old handle and fit the new one through the tank hole.
  5. Tighten the mounting nut (anticlockwise) and bend or trim the arm to line up over the flapper.
  6. Reconnect the chain, leaving a little slack, then restore water and test.

Getting the chain right

  • Too tight: the flapper won't seal and the toilet runs.
  • Too loose: the flapper won't lift fully and the flush is weak.

Leave about 1/2" of slack when the handle is at rest.

Still running?

Check the flapper and fill valve. Maintenance Depot stocks both.
